St. Martins 1-3 Fethard 2-7

St. Martin’s played with a formidable wind in the first half and failed to take advantage of this to build up a lead going into the second half. In fact both sides were level at half time on three points each. St. Martin’s did create a goal scoring opportunity midway through the first half but Johnny Hamilton was spoiled by an excellent diving block by a member of the Fethard full back line. On recommencing the action Fethard started well and quickly scored 1-1. However a fortuitous goal by Darren Codd helped to steady the Martin's cause again. Despite this Fethard continued to dominate the majority of aerial duels and generally played a more direct style of football in the second half. As the half progressed Fethard deservedly pulled away and won out comfortable winners after Brian Power goaled with less than ten minutes remaining. Captain Stephen Roche accepted the runners up medals on behalf of the Martins after what was a largely successful and enjoyable campaign. The attention now turns to Hollymount and the first game in the minor football championship against Shelmaliers next Sunday (2/3/14).
