The St. Martin’s minor footballers had a hard fought and fortunate victory over long-time Jim Byrne Cup-holders Shelmaliers on Sunday February 16th in Hollymount. The game was played at a high standard on a crisp morning with the score finishing 0-7 to 1-3, with the Martin’s claiming a one point victory. The only point of concern for both teams was their erratic shooting when scores were there for the taking. At half time, playing with a strong wind, the Martins led by 0-4 to 0-2. At the start of the second half the Martin’s got the better start to lead by 0-7 to 0-2 after forty minutes. The Shels however regrouped and, with Tony Smith on form up front, they responded with 1-1 entering the final stages of the game. With five minutes remaining the minimum was between them but the Martin’s fortunately held out to win. All 18 players who togged out played and it was a real team effort that won the game in the end. The final of the Jim Byrne Cup will take place next weekend against Fethard.
