Minor hurling champions!!

On Sunday October 19th our minor hurlers took to the field in Wexford Park and, over 60 tough and exciting minutes, they created history as they earned a fantastic victory in the county premier final against Glynn Barntown. This was our first ever “solo” win in the premier minor grade although we had previously won it in 1974 – 1976 when we combined with our opponents on Sunday, Glynn Barntown. Huge effort was put in by all the lads since the start of the year and that was more than matched by that of the mentors Stephen Murphy, John O’Connor, Paudie Kelly and Jimmy Furlong. The preparation and attention to detail that went into this team had to be seen to be believed and Stephen Murphy, in particular, left no stone unturned in the quest for victory. Yoga, athletics – indeed almost everything short of voodoo – were used by the squad in preparation and it all paid off on Sunday.

This win means that St. Martin’s now hold the premier hurling titles at juvenile, minor and under 21 levels which hopefully augurs well for our future senior teams. It would be nice to think that before long we will be have a team back again in the senior final.

The game itself was shaped by the howling wind which helped us into a first half lead of 1-14 to 0-3, the goal coming from Harry O’Connor. However in the second half we could only manage a further 3 points and a brave Glynn Barntown team kept pegging us back from frees, and then a goal, until finally we won on a scoreline of 1-17 to 1-13. Scorers: Harry O’Connor (1-4), Joe Coleman (0-6, 0-4 from frees), Nicky Greene (0-3), Joe O’Connor (0-2, 0-1 from a penalty), Darren Codd (0-1).
