Adult mens’ teams

Our junior hurlers lost a tough league encounter away to Oulart the Ballagh last weekend by 4 points. While we started well and went in front by 0-8 to 0.2 we lost our focus a bit and went in at halftime leading only by 3 points. In the second half, Oulart made good use of the wind and eventually we lost out by 4 points. It was a similar story for our senior team who were well beaten, 2-20 to 0-12, by Oulart (again!) on Wednesday in Piercestown.

Hard luck to Daithí, Mossy, Willie and Jack on the senior Wexford hurlers heavy defeat to Kilkenny on Sunday. We hope that Ciarán and co will fare better against Down when they visit Wexford Park tomorrow night, However, there is at least a a massive “CONGRATULATIONS” to Jamie Carty and Ciarán Redmond who were on the Wexford team that won the Leinster Junior Football final, against Meath, last night in Wexford Park. To make things even better, Jamie was the last-minute hero as he scored the goal that gave Wexford a dramatic win over the Royal County.

Féile Peile 2015

The 3-county 2015 Football Féile is now under full swing all over Wexford, Carlow and Wicklow with thousands of under 14 players and their families descending on the region from all over Ireland and from much further afield. Visiting St. Martin’s are Longstone GAA Club from Co Down (boys) and Donaghmoyne GAA Club from Carrickmacross, Co Monaghan (girls). We hope that all our visitors have a great time in our parish over the coming days and to help them feel at home we include a few snippets of information on our guests.

Donaghmoyne was founded in 1991 when 47 players came together to field 2 teams in their first season, a Junior and an U16 team. Over the years their numbers have grown steadily and their adult team has reached the highest Division in Monaghan while teams are fielded at all underage levels.

As for Longstone, although there was a Longstone team for a few years in the 1930's, the present Club was started in 1945. In 1958, Longstone's new park (the present pitch) was formally opened by Mr. Seamus McFerran, the former President of the G.A.A. The field cost £1,000 and most of the work needed to convert it from its old moor state was done by voluntary labour. A major legend of the club and indeed of national football was Ambrose Rogers who did the Longstone Club proud in 1991 when he realised his life-long ambition and won his All-Ireland Senior Football Championship Medal. Sadly Ambrose passed much too soon, in 1999

Finally, whatever the results, there will be a great night’s fun in the Centre tomorrow Saturday as the Féile kids, their guests and anyone in the under 12-14 bracket are welcome to come along to a Féile disco (8pm). Parents are encouraged to come up to the Bar for a quiet cup of tea, or other drink, to look back on the weekend.

Coiste na nÓg

The juvenile footballers had an excellent win in Páirc Charman on Monday night against Sarsfields, winning on a scoreline of 3-10 to 2-7.  The under 10 boys have had a very busy run of games over the last 2 weeks beginning with a successful outing in Carne where they overcame Our Lady’s Island in hurling. This was followed by a run of 3 nights’ football against St. Fintan’s, Glynn / Barntown and Shelmaliers, at the end of which the older boys remain unbeaten so far in 2015. The under 9s had a couple of competitive games in Ballymore and Piercestown before a very good showing in Hollymount saw them prevail against Shelmaliers last Friday. The older boys are developing into a very talented outfit and have proved defensively rock-solid in their games against Glynn-Barntown and Shelmaliers, conceding just 5 scores over the two nights. Well done boys!

The main competitive focus for the moment is of course on the Féile matches and we understand that our girls have won their first game against Cill Iseal of Tyrone by 2-2 to 0-6 and have then lost their 2nd match, to Arklow Rocks, by 1-6 to 0-1.

Coaching

Wexford Coaching and Games held its fourth county workshop, delivered by well-known former Kilkenny hurler & coach Martin Fogarty, in the Club last Friday 19 June. The workshop looked at raising the intensity of training and it was very well attended by Club members and others from all over the county.

Tennis

PARKS TENNIS is back again for all kids age 6-16. While registration took place today in Piercestown, it is still possible to sign up for this by contacting Harry O’Connor at 0851561475. The tennis itself will commence on Monday 29 June at 9.30 - 10.30 for under 8s, 10.30 - 11.30 for under 10s and 11.30 - 1.00pm for under 12s – under 16s.

Lotto

The Club Lotto numbers drawn last Sunday 21 June were 9, 16, 17 and 25. We had no winner of the overall €15,000 jackpot but Eoin Quigley did match 3 and he gets €50.

Model County draw

The results of the June draw are set out below; well done to Ultan Ryan of Murrintown on scooping €200.
