Games updates

There was a fine win for the senior footballers on Saturday as they beat St. Fintan’s by 3-11 to 1-7 in Piercestown. Next up for the lads will be Adamstown this coming weekend. Our minor footballers also got off to a good start in their first championship game, away to Rathgarogue / Cushinstown on Sunday. Anchored by a very solid defensive display the lads won by 2-9 to 1-6 and particularly catching the eye were Rory O’Connor, Martin Whelan and Conor Firman. The Minor footballers’ next outing will be on Sunday March 8th against the Volunteers, in Piercestown.

Club Person of the Year

Our 2014 Club Person of the year, as revealed on Saturday at the Wexford District Awards night, is Martin Quigley. A famous name throughout the land in his playing days, Martin has put in gargantuan efforts for our club in a range of guises including Chairman, senior coach and driver of the redevelopment process and the Club is very pleased to have him recognised publicly in this way. The picture below shows Martin’s lovely wife, Brid, accepting the award on his behalf at the awards ceremony in the Riverbank Hotel.

Coiste na nÓg update

Many thanks to all those who turned up to the Centre last night to register their kids with Coiste na nÓg and / or the Camogie Club. The 2nd and final registration night will take place this Friday 7 March from 7 – 8.30pm and all players and coaches are asked to ensure that they’re properly registered before the week is out.

Most of our teams have resumed training by now and tonight, Wednesday, sees one of the key age-groups, the under 8s, run out onto the astroturf again at 6pm. This will be rapidly followed by a trip to Bannow-Ballymitty on Sunday 7 March for an indoor ground hurling tournament and players are asked to assemble at our Club at 11am before travelling to the tournament.

Please bring donations along to the Centre on Friday’s registration night or contact any team manager to make a donation.

Ladies’ football

The under 14 ladies footballers will play Horeswood in Piercestown on Sunday 8 March at 11am and their training is now on Thursdays from 6-7pm. the intermediate girls will have their first league match on Saturday 14 March against Cushinstown at 1130 (venue yet to be confirmed). On the intercounty scene, we had 3 representatives on the Wexford team that fought to a creditable 2-9 each draw in the Park on Sunday, with Rachael Bridges getting good playing time. It was an good performance by the county team when you consider they were 7 points down at one stage.

We will have a presentation night for our under 12, under 14 and minor teams on Friday 20 March. Aoife McAuliffe will be there on the night with the All Ireland cup won by the Wexford ladies’ footballers last year so all are very welcome to attend.
